Popular Egyptian singer jailed for making a joke about River Nile

Popular Egyptian singer Sherine Abdel-Wahab, who also happens to be the star of the Arabic version of “The Voice,” has been sentenced to six months in prison for making a joke about Nile River.

Abdel-Wahab was slammed with a lawsuit in November after a video surfaced online showing a fan asking the singer to sing one of her popular songs, “Mashrebtesh Men Nilha,” which translates to “Have You Drunk From The Nile?”

Abdel-Wahab was heard saying “drinking from the Nile will get me schistosomiasis.”Schistosomiasis is a disease in Egypt that’s caused by flatworms living in freshwater.
Abdel-Wahab joked to “drink Evian instead.” However after the video went viral,  the singer was banned from performing in the country due to her “unjustified mockery of our dear Egypt.”
